Storm Affect On Shingles In Middle Georgia

How high winds affect shingles

It's the middle of March 2021 and the storm seasons are approaching. Check Middle Georgia on your favorite Weather site, and you'll see we've had several tornado watches already. If you're from the Macon and Warner Robins area, you already know there's more on the way. Here's a few things you might want to know about the effect of wind on your shingles.

Asphalt Shingles and Wind

Although wind may be constant, it very rarely moves in a smooth stream. It twists and turns at various speeds and patters. This is caused by changes in temperature and atmospheric pressure. The topography of the land plays a major role too. That's where your building comes in, especially if it's a home with a slanted roof. Fortunately, that's when thing get a little more predictable. When the wind hits the side of your home, it begins to travel up and over the roof. The amount of uplift pressure varies, depending on the angles. This pressure is at its highest at the roofline. And it's almost as high at the roof edges. Those areas are very susceptible to wind damage. To make things worse, as the wind travels across the roof it creates negative pressure. This is also called suction pressure. This is what may suck up or lift shingles off your roof deck.

How Can You Tell If Your Roof Is Damaged?

The first step is to walk the perimeter of your home for pieces of shingle. They usually don't go that far. If any came off, you should be able to find them in the yard near your home. The second step is to visually check your roof from the ground. Are there any obvious marks in the shingles? Are there any missing? Can you see any damage from the ground?

What If You Can't See Any Damage?

That's where we come in. Our inspection includes checking for damaged ridge or soffit vents. We look for cracked or gaping chimney flashings. We look for shingles where the edges look slightly raised, indicating the seals may have been broken. There are more checkpoints in our inspection. They are free, and if you'd like to schedule one, then use this Request For Quote form. It's free and you're under no obligation to buy!
